On the 7th and 8th of March 2022, the School of Social Sciences in collaboration with the community club and body and soul club of Assam Kaziranga University, Jorhat celebrated International Women's Day with the theme "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow" to honor, appreciate and embrace womanhood. To start off the celebration, there was a cricket match between the women faculties of the University on 7th March 2022 where team from various schools of the university played against each other and the winner was Team C with Ms. Upasana Kashyap faculty of School of Engineering as the Women of the Match.
The following day there was a Street Play Competition which was held at the University Campus on the theme "Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow" where different institutions were invited to take part in the competition. A total of seven teams participated wherein four teams were invitees of other colleges i.e., Bohona College, J.B College, Furkating College, and Royal Academy whereas, the in-house team was from the School of Social Sciences, School of Basic Science, and School of Health Science. Mr. Rajen Kumar Hazarika, Stage Drama Artist, Actor, and Director, Dibrugarh Jorhat was invited as the Judge for this competition. The ultimate winner was J.B College from Jorhat with an exceptional performance followed by the School of Social Sciences, Assam Kaziranga University as the runner-up. The Best Director was from J.B College, the best Scriptwriter was from the School of Basic Science, the Best Actor was from J.B College, and the Best Actress was from the School of Social Sciences.
The second session started with Inauguration and lighting of the lamp by all the respected Dignitaries i.e., the Honorable Chief Guest, the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, and the deans of all the schools in the University. It was followed by a Welcome Address by Prof. (Dr.) C K Gogoi, Dean of School of Social Sciences. He warmly welcomed and acknowledged the Chief Guest and the other spectators. Our Respected Vice-Chancellor Dr. P K Mishra gave the inaugural address to the congregation. A speech on the occasion was delivered by the Registrar Dr. A Srihari Krishna where he spoke on the importance of gender equality in the context of present society. The university felicitated three women of outstanding achievements namely - Padma Shri Lakhimi Baruah (in absentia), founder of Konoklota Mahila Bank, the first women run cooperative bank of Assam; Dr. Aditi Bezbaruah, retired HoD and Associate Professor of Physics, Jorhat Engineering College and Ms Rainy Khetan, Director, Assam Kaziranga University.
This was followed by a brief and thought provoking speech by Dr. Aditi Bezbaruah where she spoke on the importance of giving equal rights to women in every sector of the society and also encouraged the empowerment of women. It was followed by the Felicitation of the Women faculties and staff to appreciate and honor them for their hard work. All the women faculties and staff were felicitated by their respective Deans of the Schools.
The Cultural part of the event started with the declaration of the winners and prize distribution to the winners of the Cricket match and the Street play competition. There was an Ethnic wear competition among the women faculties and staff where Ms. Lipika Sharma from the School of Business was the runner-up and Ms. A. Imtilemla from the School of Health Sciences was the winner. Following this, there was a semi-formal cultural program where the students showcased their talents in singing, dancing, and poem recitation and entertained the crowds. There were also traditional dances of Assam and Bhutan which greatly fascinated and entertained the crowds. The program was smoothly hosted Lolly H Yeptho, Suneha, Shrestha Bhattacharjee and Aradhana Baruah which came to an end with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. SH Bovei-o, student of MSW 4th Semester from the School of Social Sciences on behalf of the core team and the coordinators who organized a successful event on the occasion of International Women's Day.
