The Women cell of Assam Kaziranga University conducted a Savings Awareness Program on 29th April from 2.30 pm at room no 314 of School of Social Sciences. The program was mainly designed to create a sense of awareness on the importance of savings and how to inculcate this habit primarily among the women working in our house keeping department, and also among women belonging to our neighborhood locality of Mohbondha area. Along with creating awareness on the importance of savings, the program also helped in imparting financial literacy by educating them on the basic banking habits and various government schemes.
The program started with a welcome address delivered by Dr Saurabhi Sarmah, Chairperson KU Women Cell and Associate Professor, School of Social Sciences. In her address, she emphasized the importance of savings in our daily life, the benefits of savings and why it is important to develop the habit of savings in us.
This was followed by a session on ‘Basic Banking and Habits’ by Ms Bandana Thakur, Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences who in her session explained the various savings and investment tools available in banks and post offices, and their comparative interest rates. She also explained the benefits of various schemes, particularly designed for women.
This was followed by a presentation on Lakhpati Baideo Scheme and Sukanya Samriddhi Account by Mr Ayyub Rahman and Ms Konkana Devi who are pursuing BSW in the school of social sciences. The presentation focused on the schemes, its eligibility criteria, benefits and the application procedures, and was successful in addressing the queries of the participants.
The awareness program was attended by a total of 35 women working in the housekeeping department of the university and few from the neighborhood locality.
