The Women's Cell of The Assam Kaziranga University celebrated celebrate Women's Equality Day on 26th August, 2023 from 3 pm onwards celebrating equality as well as create awareness of the same among all the girls and women employees of the university.
Women’s equality day is celebrated on 26th August every year throughout the entire world to respect the sacrifices done by millions of women during the universal women's suffrage movement that resulted in the 19th Amendment to the American Constitution in 1920 which provided the voting rights of American women. It recollects the bravery and perseverance of women’s rights activists who dedicated their lives to achieving equality.
The women of the university chose this occasion to celebrate the success stories of women from and within the university and also motivate individuals and groups to actively support gender equality and strive towards making the world a more inclusive and equitable place for all. The program started with a welcome address delivered by Dr H Ravishankar Kamath, Registrar, Assam Kaziranga University who in his speech highlighted the tremendous capabilities that a woman carries with her and also appreciated the gender friendly environment in the university premises. This was followed by the inaugural address delivered by Dr Saurabhi Sarmah, Chairperson, Women Cell KU and Assistant Professor, KUSSS where she emphasized the importance of humanism and collaborative ventures between men and women to achieve sustainable development in the society and women’ equality.
The cell celebrated the day by including interesting sessions on ‘ Self –Defense for Women’ in which the resources persons Ms Upasana Kashyap, Assistant professor, CE, KUSET and Mr Sanjay K Baruah, Network Engineer, Assam Kazrianga University enlightened the students with various safety tips and also briefed them about how to protect themselves from unsafe situations. In his practical session on Self –Defense for Women’ Mr Sanjay K Baruah demonstrated the various safety measures for the students while Ms Upasana Kashyap in her speech emphasized the importance of treating women equality and cited examples of women who have marked their presence in various domains like sports , space, defense etc. Besides, all the women employees of the university were honored with a small token of respect in the form of badge distribution.
The sessions were followed by a speech by Dr. Shwetambara Verma, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering and Dean Student Affairs, KU who highlighted the importance of educating the girl child for the betterment of the society. Prof. (Dr) Ritunjay Bhuyan, Dean Centre of Excellence & Skill Development also enlightened the gathering with his experience in this regard and emphasized the importance of working together by women and men, and in collaboration for a developed tomorrow.
The celebration also included a dance drama themed on women’s equality and difference performed elegantly by Ms Puja Minz and Ms Adity Roy of B. Pharm and Ms Konkana Devi of BSW. The program ended successfully with the support received from all the faculty and student coordinators of Women cell, KU a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Sagarika Bordoloi, Assistant Professor, School of Health Sciences, KU.
